MetalGL Now Supports OS X

Toronto, Oct 28, 2015: The Brenwill Workshop Ltd. announced that they have added support for OS X to their MetalGL product, which seamlessly brings the performance of Metal to OpenGL ES games and applications on iOS, and now OS X.

MetalGL is an implementation of the OpenGL ES 2.0 API that runs on Apple's Metal graphics framework on compatible iOS and OS X devices. MetalGL unleashes the power of Metal's low-latency rendering to let OpenGL ES games and applications perform up to 3x the number of draw calls, and benefit from the advanced tools available for the Metal development ecosystem, all without changing the way the game or app use OpenGL ES.

With MetalGLOpenGL ES developers get many of the performance benefits and added debugging and performance tuning capabilities of Metal, without having to abandon the proven and familiar OpenGL ES 2.0 API, or rewrite rendering logic and shaders for a different platform.

The addition of OpenGL ES support for OS X means that developers can now seamlessly port OpenGL ES games and applications from iOS to OS X without having to rewrite and support them in desktop OpenGL. On both platforms, an OpenGL ES application will benefit from the speed and additional debugging and performance tuning capabilities of Metal.

Browsers that run WebGL can also benefit from MetalGL. Since WebGL is based on OpenGL ES, the availability of a fast implementation of OpenGL ES on OS X, built on Metal, enables web browsers and other tools to use MetalGL to dramatically improve the performance of WebGL on OS X.

"With a fast implementation of OpenGL ES now available on OS X through MetalGL, we expect to see developers more easily migrate graphical games and apps from iOS to OS X, and we expect to see web browsers adopt MetalGL to improve the performance and optimization of WebGL on OS X", said Bill Hollings, President of The Brenwill Workshop Ltd., the creators of MetalGL.

The new release of MetalGL also adds support for several additional OpenGL ES 2.0 extensions, and includes two new sample applications to help developers understand and validate the performance improvements that MetalGL can provide.
